Blackbird 1, Worm 0

The early bird wrestling the worm

This morning was no different to most weekday mornings. I get up, do a few yoga stretches to get me moving, wash, dress and go down to the office to start up the laptop. While the machine is coming to its senses I feed Pup and get the coffee on the go. This morning we got to the feed Pup stage when she decided to go nuts… well more nutty than usual.
Looking out to our back garden I expected to see one of two things, either a brave squirrel or a cat. Not one in sight. The reason for Pup’s frantic barking was a small female blackbird having the biggest tug-o-war battle with a long, juicy worm. Pup was beside herself with desperation to chase the bird. Not on my watch Pupper. We’ll sit quietly and watch the battle.

It took birdie a number of attempts to extract the worm. I was surprised at its staying power. Eventually birdie delivered the final blow, worm went limp and was dragged from its tunnel. What a whopper! I must have healthy soil to grow worms that big! With her beak filled, birdie made her escape before I let Pup out. As she shot past my legs, Pup gave me a look – Mum, you messed up my bird-chasing. You know it’s my favourite thing to do!

I’m glad to have spoiled her fun just so I could watch a little bit of nature demonstrating tenacity and fearlessness in the face of tough opposition and a maniac Pup.

Wishing you all a marvellous Monday.

Cath xx
