When Mr D and I left university, we set up home in the amazing city of Glasgow. We rented a small flat with private parking (a premium item in any city), situated 5 minutes drive from the main motorway to the rest of Scotland. As a bonus, it was close to the Glasgow School of Art, a beautiful Charles Rennie Mackintosh building. For budding shopaholics, the main shopping area was easily within walking distance.
In fact, as I’m writing this, I’m reminded of how awful driving is in Glasgow. It has the worse one-way system ever. Only in Glasgow could it take you 10 minutes to drive to our favourite Indian restaurant and 30 minutes to drive home again… and that’s without heavy traffic.
We lived there for a year before we moved to the beautiful spa town of Harrogate, North Yorkshire. We’ve never moved north again. In fact we moved from there to East Yorkshire… to a large village. At first it was shock to the system. No takeaway delivery service! Mind you, that’s no bad thing. Be for the bank balance and waistline.
And that was it. We moved one more time, further into the countryside and gladly so. Our kids have enjoyed growing up surrounded by open spaces and farms. And now, in Covid crisis, we are more protected than city dwellers. Our version of rush hour is more than 3 horses out for exercise in 30 minutes!
Having said all that, I’m excited for lockdown to end, get my vaccine and enjoy a wander round our nearest city, York, home to Romans, Vikings and steeped in history.
