Spotted this beauty on my dog walk… Amanita Muscaria… reminds me of pictures from fairy stories. I love this time of year for the variety of mushrooms appearing wherever I walk… mostly in mixed woods and open fields….
I remember little cute pics of Fairies living in toadstool houses just like this specimen here. I wonder what happened to the roof… it looks as though it has a cat face carved into it. Whatever was responsible must have had an interesting trip afterwards!
And as for our little fairy… what self-respecting fairy leaves the house without a hat? A hat that just happens to be shaped rather like this mushroom –
Is it any wonder we have such lovely fairy stories… their houses contain a number of toxins some of which are psychoactive. And as for their hats, these are more commonly known as Magic Mushrooms.
Coincidence?
I am reminded of the discussion between Alice and the Caterpillar in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, by Lewis Carrol. She tells him that eating one side of the mushroom made her taller, while eating the other side made her smaller. I can’t help wondering if Lewis himself had ingested some interesting mushrooms while writing his books….
