One-liner Wednesday – Old wives tales

Red sky in the morning…

Ah- the joys of a morning run before sunrise. Look at the sky! You know what the old saying is here in the UK? Red sky at night, shepherd’s delight. Red sky in the morning, shepherd’s warning.

I have an alternative ending – red sky in the morning, Cath running in her pink day-glo jacket with a red tail-light blinking…. almost like an intermittent glo-worm!

It’s been a while…

… since I last wrote anything for this poor neglected blog. I haven’t stopped journeying through Postmenopauseland. I just hit a road block. The longer I stared at the block, the less inclined I felt to write. Where were the great ideas that used to pop into my head while walking Pup? I was still walking Pup every day, yet not one single idea appeared. My mind was elsewhere.

When your nearest and dearest are under pressure from life issues such as work troubles and health, it can be hard to keep your creative spark lit. I have to confess, with the troubles my mother has had this year with multiple cancers, chemo, radiation etc my spark all but went out.

Our annual trip to Cornwall in June provided a much-needed change of pace and scenery. There’s nothing quite like the feel of sand between your toes and a sea breeze in your hair to pep up the spirits. The icing on the cake arrived in the form of Mum’s scan results. All her tumours showed a great response to the treatments, with no new nasties forming either. This was the news I needed to get me out of my deep blue funk.

With a renewed sense of purpose and hope I felt energised enough to get to grips with my menopausal middle spread. A glimpse at a few holiday photos showed me it was definitely time to change things up. I joined Slimming World (SW) online. I figured if I could shift about 7 pounds or so I would be able to run faster. This would be ideal as I’d entered a 5K charity run for Cancer Research UK. Reading through various articles on SW, I realised I’d set myself a weedy target… if I was serious about running 5K in under 30 minutes, I was going to need to shift a few more pounds off.

So withing a day I set two new achievable goals, lose 14 pounds and run faster. Whoever said change was not possible the older you get was utterly wrong! I did shed the weight, and with careful training and yoga, managed to run faster than I’ve ever done in my youth, breaking the 30 minute target, not to mention raising a decent sum for charity. Winning all round.

Fast-forward to today and I’ve kept the weight off. I’m still running even though it’s dark and mostly wet when I run. I swear the clouds just lie in wait for me. As soon as they see my day-glo running jacket go on, out they pop. I’m getting used to squelching along the pavements accompanied by hooting owls!

Now that I’ve finally sat still long enough to write, I’m going to make an extra effort to post on this blog every Friday.
