Blog Posts, Prompts

JusJoJan 7th – Riding out the storm

Today’s word, “tempest” is supplied by Liz. Pop over and say Hi and give them a follow.

Meanwhile, back to the word of the day. In my post on anticipation, I mentioned that my boss was unlikely to have anticipated the direction our weekly 1:1 meeting took. I was right! It’s been a while since I rendered anyone speechless, but that’s what I did.

The silence, following my statement of disappointment at being passed over (yet again) for promotion, was deafening. Normally I’d be right in there with some inane chatter, just to fill the awkward void. But not this time. I said nothing. I kept my face neutral in spite of the tempest roiling inside me (I’m not a fan of conflict or making people uncomfortable), and waited…

And waited…

And waited…

Then I could see a whole bunch of emotions running across his face. My tempest had moved from me to him.

I held my nerve and waited him out. In the end he spoke first… not a fob off, but an apology for dropping the ball! I accepted graciously and enquired what he proposed to do about it. Cue more silence… which I held. I’m getting good at this. In the end he agreed to speak to the higher up management layer to see what can be done.

I’ll keep you posted on the outcome. Who knows, I may even be able to work it into future JusJoJan posts!
